Inside the Vault

The Linear Accelerator is housed in a specially constructed
vault with lead-lined concrete walls.

This concrete pad was the first visible sign, other than dirt work, that something was being built.

Concrete walls soon followed, varying from 3-feet to 8-feet thick.

Walls for the vault area were poured,
then the Cancer Center was
constructed around the vault.
The door frame to the vault weighed some 1,500 pounds.

Dr. James Petrikas is shown with the linear accelerator inside the vault. He is facing west.

The accelerator weighs approximately, 38,000 pounds.
