High frequency sound waves are directed at a specific organ, or in the case of obstetrical ultrasound (sonogram), at the growing fetus. The sound waves hit the target and bounce back as a series of echoes that are analyzed by the scanner to create a visible image.
The exam
A water soluble gel is applied to the area of your body to be examined. An imaging transducer is moved slowly over the area to produce the images, which are visible on a "TV screen" and are recorded on film.
Most exams take about 30 minutes, although some procedures may be longer.
After the exam
Following ultrasound testing, the images are read and evaluated by a radiologist and the results discussed with your doctor.
