Mammography

A mammogram is a specialized x-ray used to analyze breast tissue. It can help screen for abnormal changes before a lump is large enough to be felt.

Mammography is a valuable tool for the early detection of a variety of breast diseases, not just cancer. Its low levels of radiation make it a safe diagnostic procedure.

Examining mammography images

Presbyterian Hospital 's Diagnostic Imaging Center uses the new FDA-cleared Woman's Touch™ MammoPad™. It's a single-use foam pad that cushions the compression plates of the mammography device.

Its soft, warm surface eliminates much of the discomfort of having a mammogram.

Follow these tips to minimize discomfort:

  • If you haven't yet reached menopause, schedule your appointment during the first 2 weeks of your menstrual cycle. Your breasts are likely to be more sensitive later in the cycle, which can make the exam unnecessarily uncomfortable.
  • If you experience breast tenderness throughtout your cycle, the radiologist may recommend taking a pain medication an hour before the exam

When to Have a Mammogram

According to the American Cancer Society, mammograms should be scheduled as follows:

  • A baseline mammogram between the ages of 35 and 40.
  • A mammogram every one to two years between the ages of 40 and 50.
  • Annually after age 50.
  • Any time you feel a lump, have a nipplie discharge or inversion, see skin dimpling, or notice any other changes in the breast.

Making an Appointment

To schedule a mammogram call 903-408-5010.

Appointments can be scheduled from 9:00 a.m. through 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. Tuesday evening appointments are available for screening studies only.

  • You can make your own appointment or schedule a mammogram through your doctor.
  • You  must be 35 or older to have a mammogram.
  • You will be asked to supply your physician's name and address so the Diagnostic Imaging Department can mail your report.
  • Your mammogram will be reviewed by a radiologist who will prepare the report for your doctor. If an abnormality is detected, your doctor may schedule you for additonal breast imaging or for a biopsy.

Preparing for your mammogram

Do not use deodorant, powder, cream or perfume on your underarms or breasts before your mammogram. These may interfere with the exam.
