Lou and Jack Finney Cancer Center
The
Cancer Center at Hunt Regional Medical Center offers the region's
first comprehensive cancer care services.
Oncology patients in the Hunt County area do not need to travel
great distances for their radiation therapy. The Cancer Center provides
state of the art cancer treatment, close to home, 5 days a week.
The Lou and Jack Finney Cancer Center is operated by Texas Oncology,
the nation's largest network of medical professionals focused
on
the treatment of cancer. James J. Petrikas, D.O., a board certified
radiation oncologist, leads the Cancer Center team. Meet
the Cancer Team

“It’s important for anyone diagnosed with cancer
to understand that when you receive your diagnosis, you’re
already at the first stage of survivorship. Being a survivor is
the real journey everyone with cancer travels.”
– Dr. James Petrikas
Comprehensive cancer care services at Finney Cancer Center include:
Chemotherapy
In the chemotherapy suite patients receive the chemotherapy drugs
their oncologists have prescribed.
Since some chemotherapy treatments take several hours to complete,
the chemo suite provides comfortable infusion chairs for patients.
A photo mural showing a tranquil scene from the Texas hill country
lines one wall of the infusion room.
Chemotherapy treatment is administered at the Cancer Center Monday
through Wednesday.
Radiation therapy
The Cancer Center's Varian Clinac iX linear
accelerator provides targeted, state of the art radiation therapy.
The linear accelerator delivers precisely targeted radiation to
cancers while limiting radiation to other organs and tissue. It
features the newest oncology technology giving doctors the ability
to target and track tumors more accurately.

The accelerator is equipped with OBI (on-board imaging) that delivers
radiation with pinpoint precision at any angle to virtually any
treatment location in the body. OBI makes it possible to take 3D,
360° CT scans while the patient lies on the treatment couch.
During
treatment, patients can appreciate the beauty of a field of Texas
bluebonnets shown in a photo mural in the ceiling above the treatment
couch.
The radiation oncologists use a CT scanner to simulate the setup
of treatment portals to be treated on the linear accelerator.
Radiation treatments are administered at the Finney Cancer Center
Monday through Friday.
Brachytherapy
The newest of our cancer fighting tools, the brachytherapy system
enables radiation oncologists to treat localized prostate cancers
through the implantation of radioactive seeds that eradicate the
tumor internally.
This one-time, high-tech procedure provides precise localized treatment
for the many prostate tumors that can't be treated effectively using
the linear accelerator.
Breast Biopsy
Hunt Regional Medical Center is one of the first facilities in
the state to use the Intact breast lesion excision system. It's
a minimally invasive breast biopsy technique that is more comfortable
and more accurate than conventional methods.
It can even spare the patient additional surgical procedures.
Genetic Counseling
Genetic testing identifies whether an individual has an increased
risk for certain types of cancer.
While cancer isn't heriditary, you can inherit a higher risk for
developing some kinds of cancers. A genetic counselor frequently
visits the cancer center.
FitSTEPS for Life
This free clinical exercise program encourages and empowers cancer
survivors to become physically active at diagnosis as well as during
and after treatment.
It includes simple exercises such as treadmill walking, and strengthening
and stretching exercises.
Patients are admitted on a physician's referral.
Clinical Trials
Texas Oncology, through its affiliation with the US Oncology Research
Network, has played a role in the development of 36 cancer-fighting
ddrugs apporved by the FDA.
